Kreatorio live – Faarao Pirttikangas, L Don Okami
Roots music with an experimental take will be the theme of this evening at Kreatorio, with two artists who are firmly rooted in, but not slaves to tradition.
Faarao Pirttikangas esitää primitiivistä blues-virsi-iskelmää. Or, as Don said after seeing him the first time, “it’s a little as if T-Model Ford had come from Venus”.
L. Don Ōkami is the nom de banjo of Tampere transplant Don Lupo from South Carolina via Switzerland, Germany, Japan and Ireland. Don has been playing American for over 50 years and clawhammer banjo for over 35. After many years focusing on traditional music from the southern US, he has started exploring the space between traditional folk music, drones, noise and banjo with the aid of loopers, effects and collaborators, and his first solo album “Judgement Day in Pyynikki” was released on Hulina Records in 2018. His second album “Banjo Machine Music” was released September 2025 on the label Ikuisuus. His performances are musical journeys weaving between hard-core traditional Appalachian folk, own songs in a similar style, and trance-inducing banjo instrumentals supplemented by loops and effects Don has played to enthusiastic audiences in Finland, Sweden, UK, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In addition to his solo work, he played “post-folk” for 7 years with The Fractal Cauliflowers, and now plays punk-Americana and doombilly with Dark Bottle.
