Maailman tila aiheuttaa ahdistusta, joka saa pohtimaan myös taiteen tekemisen oikeutusta ja tarpeellisuutta. Kun tuntuu, ettei mitään ole tehtävissä eikä mihinkään voi vaikuttaa, voi ehkä vain hiljentyä väripintojen ääreen. Voin vain yrittää löytää hitusen toivoa ja kauneutta. Jotain, mikä lohduttaa hetken.

Tähän näyttelyyn olen pyrkinyt luomaan teoksia, jotka tarjoavat katsojalle mahdollisuuden nähdä maailman ja ihmisyyden ainutlaatuisella tavalla. Olen laajentanut omaa visuaalista kosmostani jo 25 vuoden ajan, ja viimeiset työni ovat riisuttuja ja värimaailmaltaan hempeämpiä. Tämän näyttelyn teokset muodostavat sarjan “sfäärejä” ja näkymättömiä tiloja tunnelmineen.

Maalatessa ajatukseni liikkuvat elämässä ja kuolemassa, ajassa ja ajattomuudessa, sekä paremman ja kauniimman toivossa. Toisinaan astun syrjään ja annan teoksen ottaa vallan. Ikään kuin hylkäisin ihmisyyden ja pahan, ja antaisin luonnolle vallan. Silloin maalaus muovautuu painovoiman ja fysiikan lakien mukaan. Minä vain annan sille alkusysäyksen, asettelen tilanteen kankaalle ja annan maalauksen tapahtua. Pieni keikaus tai kulman kohotus riittää – ja se liikkuu. Siinä hetkessä olen tarkkailija.

Lopulta teos on oma itsensä, maaginen objekti. Valmistuttuaan se ikään kuin puhuu ja vastaa minulle. Se kertoo. Tehdessä minä en kerro mitään, vaan kysyn kysymyksiä ja etsin vastauksia. Maalatessa sukellan tuntemattomaan ilman pelkoa. Astun taka-alalle ja olen uuden luomuksen ja syntymän äärellä, ihmeen vierellä.

Materiaalin tuntu on kuin elämän tuntu. Orgaaninen järjestys, merkitykselliset kerrokset ja materiaalin vastus antavat minulle tavan katsoa ja tuntea maailmaa ja maalausta. Maalauksen ydin on hämmästelyä ja hetkellisyyden vangitsemista.

Vain luottamalla ja päästämällä irti voin antautua suurimpaan seikkailuun. Teoksissa on jotain lohduttavaa ja romanttista. Ne ovat elämänmakuisia, valuessaan ja liikehtiessään omien rajojensa yli. Samalla ne ovat kuin leikattuja paloja äärettömyydestä. Hyvässä elämässä on esteitä, kuten kivet joessa. Mutta juuri nuo kivet antavat virtaavalle vedelle sen elävyyden ja liikkeen. Samoin maalauksessa maalimateriaali pakkautuu, työntyy, törmää ja pulpahtaa esteiden ohi.

Prosessi on kaikkein tärkein. Se kumpuaa syvältä sisältäni, eikä ole pakotettavissa tai kiirehdittävissä. Ajatellessani ja maalatessani olen yksin, mutta en koskaan yksinäinen. Filosofinen kotini syntyy juuri niissä hetkissä, joissa saan ajatella ja nauttia visuaalisesta artikuloinnista.

Teos on sivutuote – mutta toisin kuin ihminen, se voi joskus olla valmis.

FRAGMENTS OF INFINITY AND OTHER ABSTRACT RICHES

The state of the world causes anxiety, which leads me to question even the justification or necessity of making art. When it feels like nothing can be done and nothing can be influenced, perhaps all one can do is fall silent before the surface of color. All I can do is try to find a glimpse of hope and beauty. Something that offers comfort, if only for a moment.

In this exhibition, I have sought to create works that offer the viewer a chance to see the world and humanity in a unique way. I’ve been expanding my own visual cosmos for 25 years, and my most recent works are more stripped down—softer in palette and presence. The pieces in this exhibition form a series of “spheres” and invisible spaces filled with moods and atmospheres.

As I paint, my thoughts wander through life and death, time and timelessness, always in search of something better, something more beautiful. At times, I step aside and allow the painting to take over—as if I were abandoning humanity and its evils, and surrendering to nature instead. In those moments, the painting shapes itself through the laws of gravity and physics. I merely give it an initial impulse, arrange the situation on the canvas, and let the painting happen. A small tilt or a raised corner is enough—and it begins to move. In that moment, I become an observer.

Eventually, the painting becomes its own entity—a magical object. Once it’s finished, it begins to speak to me and answer. It tells its own story. While creating, I don’t tell anything—I ask questions and search for answers. When I paint, I dive into the unknown without fear. I step into the background and find myself beside something new being born, next to a miracle.

The feel of the material is like the feel of life itself. Organic order, meaningful layers, and the resistance of the medium offer me a way to see and feel both the world and the painting. The essence of painting is in wonderment and the capturing of fleeting moments.

Only by trusting and letting go can I surrender to the greatest adventure. There is something comforting and romantic in these works. They carry the taste of life, flowing and moving beyond their own boundaries. At the same time, they are like fragments cut from infinity. In a good life, there are obstacles—like stones in a river. But it is those very stones that give the flowing water its vitality and movement. In the same way, in painting, the material compacts, pushes, collides, and bursts past its obstacles.

The process is the most important thing. It comes from deep within me, and it cannot be forced or rushed. As I think and paint, I am alone—but never lonely. My philosophical home is born in those very moments when I am allowed to think and to enjoy visual articulation.

The artwork is a by-product —but unlike a human being, it can, at times, be complete.
